Collaboration, Customer Service and Community Awareness
Event Description
Public library director, Mary Lou Carolan, has worked to dynamically transform libraries using a blend of innovative marketing techniques, community-centered projects, storytelling, and placemaking principles. Carolan believes public libraries need to use their unique status as trusted institutions to implement what she calls the “3i” approach - initiate, innovate and instigate - to become true community leaders.
Carolan asserts that a successful library today builds enduring relationships with school districts, collaborates and innovates with local small businesses, is a catalyst for important community conversations, and regularly connects with legislative leaders to be a voice in the decision-making process. A customer-centered library develops from knowing, engaging and fostering the interests of the community.
Drawing from fourteen years of library experience, bolstered by twenty-five years leading community-based non- profit organizations, Carolan shares a variety of techniques from successful marketing campaigns and outreach initiatives. Participants will engage in a lively and interactive workshop to discuss challenges, share ideas, learn to tell stories, explore possibilities, and utilize tools designed to help you make the community the heart of your library.
Lunch and light refreshments will be provided.
