Event Description
Libraries play a vital role in fostering inclusive environments where children of all abilities can thrive and develop a love for learning. In this workshop, participants will delve into the essential aspects of adapted and inclusive programming. Learn how to manage behavior challenges as well as gain literacy techniques for disabled children.
A Parent's Perspective on Adapted vs Inclusive Programs The presenter will provide a parent's perspective on the purpose and goals of enrolling a child in adapted or inclusive library programs. She will define terms and explain how each type of program addresses different needs in the community. The presentation will be followed by the opportunity to share ideas and questions. Adapted Storytime Basics Interested in offering adapted storytime at your library? Learn best practices for getting started and high-impact modifications you can make to traditional storytime elements. Adapted Outreach Take Adapted Storytime on the road! Learn how to host an Adapted Storytime at local preschools. Tour Westlake Porter Public Library's Storytime Space View the room where Westlake Porter Public Library hosts its storytimes and see how it gets adapted for the Adapted Storytime program. See the props, accessibility tools, sensory manipulatives, and more that WPPL uses in its adapted and inclusive programming. Behavior Basics Our presenters will provide solutions for common behaviors you might commonly see in an adapted or inclusive program. There will also be time for questions. Presenters: Wendy has a master’s degree in special education with additional training in Positive Behavior Supports. Wendy has worked as a Behavior Curriculum Intervention Specialist for 5 years and prior to that she worked for the Achievement Centers for Children in the Autism program. Russell recently joined Cuyahoga DD as a Behavior Curriculum Intervention Specialist. Russ has worked as an Intervention Specialist for students with behavioral disabilities as well as significant trauma for the last 18 years. Engaging Children Who Need Supports in Literacy Activities The presenter will provide a brief introduction followed by ideas on how to use multisensory techniques and materials to support active participation in literacy experiences. Specific examples will be shared that foster comprehension and the engagement of children with differing abilities. The presentation will be followed by the opportunity to share ideas and questions. Presenter: Inclusive Programming Jen Johnson will share tips and strategies for making all children's programming more inclusive and accessible for children with disabilities and other barriers.
