A Note From a
Continuing Education Coordinator

In case you missed it, registration is open for the 2024 Technology Conference: AI and Cybersecurity for Forward-Thinking Libraries, which will take place Thursday, November 7th at the Hilton Garden Inn Twinsburg. This year’s conference brings together industry experts, technologists, and librarians from all across the United States to deliver timely, impactful information to anyone in our field: frontline staff, IT professionals, and management alike.

Keynote speaker Jia (Kevin) Liu, Associate Professor in the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The Ohio State University and an Amazon Visiting Academic with Amazon.com, will kick off the event by exploring recent trends in generative AI. From there, you will have the option of attending breakout sessions in two tracks: Artificial Intelligence or Cybersecurity

.

The AI breakout track includes:

  • Breaking Boundaries: Harnessing the Power of Artificial Intelligence and ChatGPT to Transform Library Services
  • Talpa: How to Build an AI Product for Libraries and Not Lose Your Soul
  • Using AI robots with Neurodivergent Youth for a library based Robot Mediated Behavior Intervention program

The cybersecurity breakout track includes:

  • Recovering From & Avoiding Ransomware
  • Cybersecurity Best Practices: Understanding the Fundamentals
  • Cybersecurity Lessons from the Threat Actors

There will also be structured roundtable discussion, networking, and opportunities to connect with vendors at the conference. Special thanks to OPLIN for their assistance coordinating this event. Visit the event page to learn more and register.

I look forward to seeing you there!

Volunteers Needed:

Now is your opportunity to get involved with the Northeast Ohio Regional Library System.  Below are different committees that would appreciate your voice.  Contact Melissa Lattanzi by September 30th if you are interested in one of the following committees:

  • Children's Summer Reading Committee
  • Teen Summer Reading Committee
  • Adult Summer Reading Committee

Awards Selection Group Representatives Needed!

We still need NEO-RLS member representatives to serve on the Awards Selection Group group. Please note that members who nominated someone this year are not eligible to participate. The selection group will then convene virtually on Monday, September 30th at 2:00 PM to review submissions and determine this year’s award recipients. This is a great opportunity to lend your voice and help recognize the outstanding contributions within our library community! If you’re interested in participating, please reach out to ragan.snead@neo-rls.org.

Teen Think Tank in Youngstown

Spots are still available for Teen Think Tank, Friday, September 13, 9:30 am – 4:00 pm at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County (305 Wick Ave, Youngstown).

Teen Think Tank is a librarian-led event bringing teen and library specialists together to share ideas, insights, and opinions. The goal is for you to leave with at least one new contact and a handful of new ideas for programs, decorations, crafts, books, and more. Expect a lot of hands-on opportunities so you get to try games, make crafts, etc. - all ideas and experiences you can take back to your library.

This is a FREE event. Lunch is on your own.  You can bring your lunch, have food delivered, or go eat out at a nearby restaurant.

Register here: https://forms.gle/bC74xLEY8TiGAsNd7

I cannot overstate the value of Teen Think Tank. It’s a tremendous networking opportunity and collaborative, supportive environment for learning and discovery, plus just a welcome space to connect with other teen services people who GET IT.  Ohio Collections Analysis Initiative

The Ohio Collections Analysis Initiative (OCAI) is a collaborative project between the State Library of Ohio and TeachingBooks.net.  OCAI is a tool for all Ohio library staff to analyze their collections to ensure all children and young adult readers can see themselves in the books at their school and public library.  The tool is free and can be used to audit and refresh library collections and displays and the resources for each title can be used to enhance the reading experience with author interviews, lesson plans, program ideas, book trailers, and more.

The State Library of Ohio and TeachingBooks are offering regular office hours and a slate of helpful workshops to get started with OCAI or continue learning about the power of the tool.  Check out the OCAI fall 2024 schedule for more information and registration links.  Email Erin Kelsey, Library Consultant at the State Library of Ohio at ekelsey@library.ohio.gov with questions.
