A Note From a
Continuing Education Coordinator

Within the last year and a half, we have had several requests for a public speaking class.  NEO-RLS has answered your need with Public Speaking: Effective Skills for Libraries which is scheduled for Thursday, September 19th at the Twinsburg Public Library.  This program aims to equip library staff with the tools needed to communicate confidently and clearly—whether addressing a room full of patrons, facilitating workshops, or advocating for library programs.

If you ever wanted to dip your toe into public speaking this is the place to do it.  The workshop will provide a safe space to test the waters with small group activities.  Learn to overcome nerves and get your audience’s attention, whether it’s a large group of patrons, a staff meeting, or just a one-on-one conversation.  You will hear how to craft a presentation, paint a picture with your words and so much more.

There is limited seating so please register today. Click this event link for more information and to register.   Empower your voice and become more poised when speaking in a public setting. Now is your chance, don’t miss it!

Have a great day!

Melissa

Looking for Summer Reading Program Volunteers

We know summer reading is over for the libraries.  Yet it is time for NEO-RLS to start planning for all of our summer reading workshops: children, teen, and adult.  We will hold planning meetings virtually in October.  Please email Melissa Lattanzi  by September 15th if you are interested in helping to plan the 2025 summer reading events which will be scheduled for January and February 2025.

Registration is now open for ODNFest 2024.

The State Library of Ohio will be hosting the 6th Annual ODNFest in-person on October 3rd, 2024. ODNFest is an opportunity for library and museum digitization professionals to gather to explore current and relevant digitization topics. The ODNFest name comes from the Ohio Digital Network (ODN), Ohio’s Digital Public Library of America (DPLA)’s service hub. Attendees do not have to be contributors to ODN participate.

The State Library of Ohio is pleased to announce one of the featured presentations will be Not Just a Technical Problem: Building a Collaborative Digital Preservation Network in Michigan by Dr. Chelsea Denault. Dr. Denault (she/her) is the Coordinator of the Michigan Digital Preservation Network (MDPN), a program of the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services, where she works with partners to bring affordable and easy-to-use digital preservation services to cultural memory organizations of all sizes across Michigan. She will provide a brief explanation of the importance of digital preservation in the lifecycle of digital collections, share insights from establishing a statewide digital preservation network, and discuss future plans for the MDPN and collaborators beyond Michigan.

Other presentations of the day include Questioning Ethical Access: Conversations with Practitioners by Virginia Dressler, Kent State University, and Alternative and Local Press: The Pulse of a Culture by Aaron O’Donovan, Columbus Metropolitan Library. The conference will also include poster sessions, and networking opportunities. The day will begin with networking over a light breakfast and attendees will receive a boxed lunch.

If you have any questions please contact Penelope Shumaker at pshumaker@library.ohio.gov.
