A Note From the
Executive Director

Last week, severe storms swept through Northeast Ohio, leaving thousands without power, internet access, and essential services. In the wake of the storm, the incredible libraries and dedicated library staff across our region emerged as lifelines for their communities, offering shelter, resources, and support.

For example, Cuyahoga County Public Library partnered with Giant Eagle to distribute bottled water to those affected by the storm. Despite losing power, Mentor Public Library continued to serve its patrons by offering drive-thru services and taking requests over the phone. The Cleveland Public Library opened its doors to provide a cool and safe place for residents to take shelter and charge their devices. In Westlake, the Public Library took the initiative to call in a food truck, offering hot meals to those in need.

These examples are just a few of the many ways libraries across Northeast Ohio stepped up to serve as havens for their communities during the recent storms. Whether it was providing essential resources, a place to cool off, or simply a friendly voice on the other end of the line, our library community proved once again that they are more than just places to borrow books—they are pillars of the communities they serve!

Have a great day!

Reimagining School Readiness Workshop is September 10, 2024 (virtual)

The State Library of Ohio is pleased to announce Fall 2024 Reimagining School Readiness Workshop which will be held virtually on September 10, 2024. Registration is open now.

Do you wonder what research really says about how to support school readiness?

The Reimagining School Readiness Toolkit is a suite of research-backed resources created for library staff to help families prepare children ages birth to 8 years for success in school and in life.

Through an interactive presentation with hands-on activities, this training will introduce library staff to the research, practical implications, and resources offered in the toolkit. Library staff who work with children from ages 0 – 8 and their families will benefit most from this training. The workshop will live virtually. It will not be recorded.

September 10, 2024
10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

The workshop topics include:

  • key findings from current cognitive and developmental psychology research
  • the implications of those findings for library staff’s daily work
  • practical ready-to-implement ideas for activities
  • resources for staff training and for parents/caregivers

Registration and more information can be found the State Library of Ohio’s website.
