A Note From the
Continuing Education Coordinator

Some of you may have noticed that NEO-RLS is not hosting a technology conference this year. In lieu of this, we are excited to partner with the Ohio Library Council for Right Click 2023: The Library IT Conference. Right Click 2023 will take place on Friday, November 3rd at the Quest Conference Center Columbus. NEO-RLS dues-paying members will pay OLC member fees for registration even if you are not an OLC member. I will have a table at the event with our new VR & AR Experiences Kit, so be sure to stop by and say hello! Click this link to learn more and register for Right Click.

In addition to the new VR & AR Experiences Kit and Health Literacy Kit: Personal Wellness that I discussed in the September 27th newsletter, I am happy to share that many of our existing Circulating Technology Kits have been refreshed. Our Children’s, Tween, and Teen STEAM e-Kits have been updated with new tablets and devices such as the Robo Wunderkind and Root Coding Robot. Our Ozobot Classroom Kit and Health Literacy Kit: Preventative Tech have also been refreshed with new tablets and smart phones. To learn more and reserve a kit, follow this link or email me at jeff.laser@neo-rls.org.

I’d also like to highlight our newest archived webinar, Staying Current & Assisting Library Patrons through Rapid Technological Changes presented by Nick Tanzi. In this excellent webinar, Nick identified core library staff tech skills, how to build and maintain those skills, best practices in patron tech instruction, and more. Register here.

Have a great day!

Jeff

Ohio LSTA Competitive Grant application are due October 31st. Libraries are invited to submit requests for up $50, 000.

Ohio LSTA Grants are an essential part of our service, and we encourage all types of libraries to submit proposals for Ohio LSTA Competitive Grants. This grant initiative supports State Library of Ohio’s new LSTA Five Year Plan 2023-2027 and invites proposals that address at least one of the following three focus areas:

Library as Community Anchor – Supports the role libraries play in strengthening their communities and providing a destination for learning, engagement, social support and expression. This can include areas of employment-related help, economic development support, civic engagement, gathering spaces, and support for the mental health of those served.

Literacy - Supports the library’s role in the learning experience where literacy is defined as the ability to read, write and interact across a range of platforms and tools, and it encompasses early literacy, digital literacy, functional literacy, financial literacy, health literacy, and others.

Outreach and Engagement - Assist libraries in providing new and innovative ways of offering services to users and potential users and in reaching individuals at a range of locations and through a variety of methods, typically outside of the traditional library facility. Efforts may include reaching populations not otherwise served by the library and the establishment of new or novel partnerships.

Please note: applications must be completed in one sitting, so prepare accordingly. Information about the Ohio LSTA grant program can be found at:  https://library.ohio.gov/libraries/grants/competitive-grants/.

The State Library of Ohio is pleased to announce the launch of our new Libraries By the Numbers dashboard created in partnership with the DataOhio Portal.

Libraries By the Numbers organizes Ohio public library survey data into three tabs: Summary Statistics, Library Statistics, and Financial Information. Information is displayed as interactive maps, infographics, and tables. For easy comparisons, each tab can be filtered by one or more library systems. In addition, there are interactive maps, infographics, and tables.  Users can download data in full table report as well.

Infographics, tables, and downloadable data may be used to demonstrate the impact of your public library system in the community and how Ohio libraries make our state stronger.
