GENERAL SUMMARY
Under moderate supervision, copy catalogs library materials which includes, but is not limited to searching and adding library’s holdings to existing records in the library’s national bibliographic database, editing records in the library’s integrated library system, and performing necessary bibliographic maintenance duties as assigned. Sorts and routes new materials to branches as needed.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities required include:
1. Ability to apply basic levels of English grammar, spelling, punctuation, and basic mathematical functions such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, ratios, etc.
2. Ability to accurately organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files.
3. Ability to detect basic errors, make corrections and detail orientation to transcribe data, as directed and under established procedures.
4. Ability to apply sound judgment, resolve problems, and make effective decisions.
5. Ability to demonstrate proficient use of personal computer software or systems applicable to the essential functions of the job, which may include (but not be limited to) email/calendar software, internet/intranet browsers, word processing, spreadsheets, database software, and
various systems or software used by CCPL.
6. Knowledge of the library’s integrated automated library system as it pertains to cataloging.
7. Superior verbal and written interpersonal skills and customer service skills.
8. Skills necessary to develop and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships with co-workers, customers, vendors, and/or representatives of other agencies.
9. Ability to apply advanced organizational, problem solving and analytical skills.
10. Knowledge of cataloging functions in an online library environment.
11. Skill in organizing and prioritizing multiple tasks.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
1. Complies with Cuyahoga County Public Library’s policies, rules, guidelines, procedures, requirements, standards, and practices applicable to the job, including (but not limited to) work scheduling and attendance, customer service, use of Library property, computer use, personal conduct, and confidentiality.
2. Searches the library’s international bibliographic utility for existing metadata records, evaluating records retrieved to select ones that best fit established local and national standards, and exports records to the library’s integrated library system.
3. Edits metadata records in the integrated library system to conform to local and national guidelines and standards, verifies relevant name and title access points, assigns call numbers based on recommended number in the record or by local practice, creates and edits item records as instructed.
4. Performs bibliographic maintenance in the integrated library system to add volumes and correct errors or problems as needed and as assigned.
5. Creates labels with cataloging/biographical information for library materials as necessary.
6. Sorts and routes cataloged materials to appropriate branches as needed.
7. Performs miscellaneous clerical tasks to facilitate departmental operations such as answering phones, creating barcodes, and ordering supplies.
8. Maintains a working knowledge of all relevant modules of the library’s integrated library system and the library’s international bibliographic utility.
9. Tabulates and reports monthly statistics for cataloging of new materials, added copies and routing new materials to branches.
The intent of this position description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by incumbents of this job. Incumbents may be requested to perform jobrelated tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.
Summary Minimum Education & Experience Required
1. High school diploma or GED.
2. At least one year of experience working in data analysis and database searching in an environment where accuracy is critical.
OTHER TESTING/LICENSES REQUIRED
1. A criminal background check is required, as are pre-employment drug and nicotine screens.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS
1. No major sources of working conditions discomfort, i.e. standard work environment with possible minor inconveniences due to occasional noise, crowded working conditions, and/or minor heating, cooling or ventilation problems.
2. Routine pushing of moderately heavy items, such as full carts and/or sitting for long periods of time, as well as frequent stooping and bending.
3. Work involves near continuous use of computer terminal.
4. Work is subject to inflexible deadlines, production standards, and frequent interruptions
