Job Summary
The Getty Research Institute seeks a creative, thoughtful, and energetic Digital Collection Development Librarian to oversee and develop the content and programs associated with the Getty Research Portal as well as the GRI’s own digitization program for published materials. Reporting to the Chief Librarian, this position takes a principal role in defining, developing, managing, and marketing the Portal’s collections and future roadmap, working closely with a wide variety of colleagues in various roles at the Getty, overseeing a functional team, and in managing an international advisory group and working oneA-on-one with potential and current contributors. Launched in 2012 with 20,000 volumes, 8 contributors, and the goal of providing unified and free access to the digitized literature of art history, today the Portal hosts metadata bringing together over 170,000 digitized volumes from over 40 institutions, and offers Virtual Collections to support pedagogy and public programs. In addition to working with colleagues at the Getty Research Institute and Getty Digital to maintain and develop the Portal, this position may also assist with some of the external digital library partnerships in which the Getty Library participates, including but not limited to Hathi Trust, DPLA, and web archiving projects.



The ideal candidate will be experienced and knowledgeable in digital librarianship, project management, external partnerships, book digitization, the coordination of the work of others, and art historical research, gained through a combination of education and experience.

The Institute's activities and scholarly resources guide and sustain each other and collectively provide a unique environment for research, critical inquiry, and scholarly exchange.



Major Job Responsibilities
Oversee and develop content and programs associated with the Getty Research Portal
Working with GRI and Getty Digital colleagues, oversee GRI digitization program for published materials.
Serve as primary coordinator and communicator for a functional Portal team of staff from different areas of the Library and Getty Digital
Take a leading role in convening and participating in Portal Governance Group
Redefine and develop Portal Advisory committee
Manage new and ongoing relationships with Portal contributors by keeping in close contact via various forms of communication
Promote Portal to various audiences, writing posts of various kinds, articles, speaking at appropriate venues virtually and in-person, developing Virtual Collections, digital art history and humanities projects, etc.
May assist with other external digital library partnerships, through maintaining or building relationships and exploring potential contributions to virtual collections.


Qualifications
MLIS from ALA-accredited institution; graduate work in Art History preferred.
3-5 years experience working in a library or research institution with at least 3 years working with digital projects and initiatives.
1-2 years supervisory or project management experience required.
Experience with book digitization projects preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of library management systems.
Solid understanding of bibliographic metadata structure and principles, particularly within the digital arena.
Bibliographic familiarity with at least 2 foreign languages preferred.
Current knowledge of art history and research methods preferred
Excellent communication skills as well as tact and diplomacy to work effectively with a wide range of colleagues internally and externally.
Excellent attention to detail.
Experience developing content and giving presentations for a variety of audiences to promote Portal and other projects.
Ability to lead, work independently, and collaboratively
Must be creative, proactive, forward-looking, detail-oriented, and flexible
