Job Summary
This limited term position (36 months) catalogs books and other published materials from the Whitney and Lee Kaplan African American Visual Culture Collection, consisting of over 3600 publications on African American artists and Black visual culture. Publications include catalogs, magazines, artist’s books, pamphlets, and zines. The Metadata Specialist II may also catalog other publications acquired as part of the Getty Research Institute’s African American Art History Initiative. The position creates and updates bibliographic, holdings, item, and authority records while performing a range of cataloging from simple copy cataloging to complex original cataloging. Reporting to the Cataloging Supervisor, the Metadata Specialist II works in the Getty Library’s Technical Services Department, operating within the GRI’s Collection and Discovery Division.

Major Job Responsibilities
Performs complex metadata creation, selection, evaluation, and editing for resource access, description, and record management in Ex Libris Alma and OCLC Connexion systems
Prepares bibliographic metadata for contribution to BIBCO and name authority metadata for contribution to NACO, according to the standards of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC)
Performs physical processing of materials (e.g., labeling, marking, stamping, and housing)
Applies knowledge of MARC, RDA, and AACR2
Uses various library software applications to execute complex transactions to manage library materials
Provides library services to staff and other library users
May provide assistance in unpacking, organizing, and distributing materials
May provide training to staff and other colleagues, when required
May review work of other project staff
Suggests and may make revisions to procedures within assigned area in consultation or collaboration with other staff
Participates in section meetings and other meetings as appropriate
Qualifications
MLIS from an ALA-accredited library school; graduate degree in Art History or a related discipline preferred.
Minimum 2-3 years professional experience
May require special subject, language, or technical expertise
Requirement

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of RDA; knowledge of related LC-PCC policy statements for bibliographic and authority data preferred
Knowledge of AACR2
Knowledge of MARC bibliographic, holdings, and authority formats
Knowledge of Library of Congress Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus
Facility with OCLC Connexion and Alma or other integrated library system preferred
Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language preferred
Ability to lift boxes and push trucks up to 40 pounds
Ability to compile cataloging statistics and compose monthly reports using e.g. Microsoft Excel and/or Word
Ability to meet deadlines
Ability to apply policies and procedures consistently
Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
Excellent communication skills
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
