Event Description
Curious about what's new in library design? In this session, we will cover an overview of current trends in library design with a panel of experts in library design. Case studies of 5 new buildings will be reviewed to highlight examples in action. There will be ample time for questions.  The session will be moderated by Wendy Tressler, MLIS, Director of Capital Planning & Project Management, Columbus Metropolitan Library.  The panel of experts include:

  • Jonathan Moody, CEO Moody Nolan
  • Richard Ortmeyer, Partner Bostwick Design Partnership

Presenters:  

Marc Bittinger, Principal and Director of Design, has been involved with the design of the firm’s projects large and small. Since joining the firm in 1985, he has been instrumental in it’s growth and ability to serve various Libraries and Higher Education clients. Marc grew up the son of an architect, coloring beside his father at the home drafting table. His love and understanding of architecture at an early age was realized after viewing old family photos framed by important famous buildings. Marc shares his keen sense of design with owners, users and communities to engage them in the process of creating unique outcomes and achieving project goals in the built environment. He is also involved in many professional organizations serving his community and beyond including the American Library Association, Ohio Library Council, and the Strongsville Chamber of Commerce as well as a past board member of the Ohio Chapter of the American Liver Foundation and Strongsville Education Foundation.

Peter Bolek, President and Director of design for HBM Architects, is the heart of the firm’s collaborative working model taking an active role in both strategic and detailed design solutions in the studio.  His passion lies in the belief that in addition to solving complex and pragmatic needs of a client’s program, design has the transformative power to enhance our everyday life experiences.  Peter provides design leadership and insight into all the firm’s projects, as well as acting as the project designer on the firm’s most significant projects. 
Peter has more than 20 years of experience with public sector clients and has participated in and orchestrated all facets of feasibility studies, programming, planning, design and construction of library projects across the country.


Jonathan Moody's work resides at the intersection of architecture and service—bringing transformational design to underserved communities. He believes architecture is a medium through which people can come together and participate in positive change.

As CEO of Moody Nolan— the largest African American owned firm in the country—Jonathan is driven by a passion to continue his father’s legacy of diversifying the practice of architecture. His dedication to advancing diversity garners national attention, recently earning Moody Nolan the 2021 AIA Firm of the Year Award.  Recognized among his peers as an exceptional leader and mentor, Jonathan received the AIA Young Architect Award in 2021.  With more than 15 years of service to the practice, Jonathan’s leadership facilitates ongoing expansion of the firm, with 12 locations across the nation. Moody Nolan’s work continues to exceed industry benchmarks, receiving more than 300 design awards and citations from AIA and NOMA.  

Rick Ortmeyer has 30 years of experience serving the public sector and institutional clients, providing him with a deep understanding of the responsibilities inherent to institutions supported through public and philanthropic funding. His career experience includes over 80 library planning and design projects, 45 with Bostwick Design Partnership since he joined the firm in 2003.


Margaret Sullivan is a national thought leader in assisting public libraries envision their preferred future. Margaret leads Margaret Sullivan Studio, a full-service strategy and design firm, collaborating with innovative library systems internationally. Since the firm’s founding in 2014, MSS has become the industry leader in re-envisioning the 21st century library for diverse and complex contemporary communities, with a focus on social justice and racial equity. Margaret has assisted over forty public library systems, including New York Public Library, DC Public Library, Las Vegas-Clark County Library District, Richland Library, New Haven Free Public Library, Salt Lake City Public Library, Public Library, Chicago Public Library, Los Angeles Public Library and Memphis Public Library define their version of what a 21st century library can be through strategic planning, facilities master planning, visioning, programming, and interior design.
