Event Description
In the morning we will touch upon the nuts and bolts of building a digitization program. We’ll start from the very beginning as we discuss the reasons why you want to start scanning, the equipment and knowledge potentially needed, and workflows to achieve your goals in a timely and efficient manner.
The workflow section will include topics such as: selection of materials, gathering information about the materials (e.g. copyright, statistics, etc.), scanning best practices, creation of derivatives, backing up your work, providing access to your ravenous public, etc. Examples will be given of projects performed at each presenters’ institutions.
This workshop will cover:

Following lunch we will have a question and answer session about the digital projects that you are working to complete and or start. Bring your questions and concerns and receive answers from the experts.
Then you will have opportunity to hear about the DPLA (Digital Public Library of America) from Jen Johnson, DPLA Project Coordinator, State Library of Ohio.
After our discussion you will learn how a collaboration among historical societies, a college, and humanities council created a virtual museum of the county’s history. One Florida county’s museums were largely closed to the public, open just a few hours a week. Leveraging the college’s ample server space to host a WordPress site and college interns to photograph the societies’ museum artifacts, the project provided an open repository for all to learn from and enjoy. Project director Christina Drain received two Florida Humanities Council grants totaling $35,000 to fund and manage the three-year web-based project.
