Storytimes are much more than just stories. Libraries are presenting early literacy programs that promote and foster both reading and STEM skills. The time traditionally devoted to crafts at the end of storytimes presents programming staff with another opportunity to provide experiential learning for children and their parents.

You will learn to:

  • Articulate and communicate the value of storytime activities to parents and administration.
  • Introduce and transition to activities for children and parents
  • Create a wide variety of activities to suit your audience and budget.
  • Explore a variety of resources for finding new ideas.

Adding learning activities to your storytime doesn't mean that you have to eliminate crafts entirely. It gives you the opportunity to offer valuable learning experience to your patrons and another way to demonstrate the value of early literacy programming to patrons, administration and funders.

Participants will receive printables ready to print and pair with several simple activities and a bibliography of sources.

Competency: Children's Programming
Sub-Category: Designs, implements and sponsors library programs that offer information, special skills or entertainment for children and their families and caregivers.
