Presenter:

Sharon Groh-Wargo has been involved with PFLAG Cleveland for over 20 years, serving as President from 2005-2020. She is currently Vice-President. Founded in 1973, PFLAG is the first and largest organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and advocating for LGBTQ+ people and their families. It is dedicated to creating a caring, just, and affirming world for LGBTQ+ people and those who love them.  PFLAG Cleveland has been active in this effort for the Greater Cleveland area since 1985.

Sharon is a registered dietitian nutritionist (RDN) and holds a PhD in nutrition. Her long experience in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) informs her understanding of sexual orientation, gender identity, intersex, and the challenge of interacting with the health care system. While in clinical practice she was instrumental in forming the MetroHealth Pride Alliance. Sharon also instituted collaborations with all three major hospital systems in Cleveland for training physicians to observe a PFLAG Cleveland monthly support group meeting. They are able to hear first-hand the impact “coming out” has on families. Sharon is currently Professor Emeritus at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Sharon has been married to her husband, Frank for 51 years. They have two children.  Her oldest came out as a lesbian at the end of their freshman year in college. That is the event that precipitated her involvement as a volunteer with PFLAG. She exemplifies what people involved with PFLAG often say: “When you no longer need PFLAG (for support), PFLAG needs you (for education and advocacy)”
