Event Description
Adventure Begins at Your Library, and let's start the adventure with NEO-RLS's summer reading workshop. The adventure begins with getting to know new people with a fun icebreaker that will generate many program ideas. This will be followed by sessions focused on intergenerational, STEM, and preschool programming. Don't forget the decorations. After lunch, we will be hosting a program palooza. You will have the opportunity to hear 6 different programs and ask questions. We will end the day with art and a conversation about tracking. More details will be coming soon. Don't miss this fun-filled day and opportunity to connect with your peers.
Adventure Awaits with Seniors and Children
Connecting our youth with our senior generation has become a focus for many libraries and community centers. At Rocky River Public Library, we have found fun in remote gaming between a senior living facility and our library, merging children and tweens with our more advanced community. This initial program has spurred additional opportunities to bring together the younger and the older. We will discuss the spark for our program, how it has developed, and a few other related programs that have this community thriving together.
Presenters:
Donna Zmrazek is a 31-year veteran of school librarianship with Berea City Schools. During that time, she also became a part of the Rocky River Public Library librarian staff. She has spent the past 10 years exclusively as a Children’s Librarian at RRPL.
Cathleen Grossman has served in roles developing from Children’s Associate to Librarian to Supervisor at Rocky River Public Library over the past 12 years. She served as a children’s outreach specialist with Cumberland County Public Library in North Carolina in a previous life, where she learned about the diverse opportunities that libraries provide.
Ideas For a S'more Fun Camping Program
This presentation will give other librarians simple STEM ideas to incorporate into their own Summer Reading program. From building a s'more oven, creating tents for toys, modeling constellations with marshmallows and toothpicks, to going on a scavenger hunt in your own backyard. By using just a few simple materials, children can experience a camping trip they won't soon forget.
Presenter:
Amber Anderson is from Canton, Ohio and has been a Children's Programmer for 17 years. She currently works at Massillon Public Library as a Children's Programming Specialist, creating story times, and Summer Reading programs as well as going to outreach preschool visits. Amber is currently on the NEO-RLS Summer Reading Workshop planning committee as well as the CLSP Theme and Slogan committee. Amber resides in Canton, Ohio with her husband of 22 years and five children.
Preschool Adventures!
Do you do preschool storytimes and at a loss to work "adventure" into them? Barbara Scott, Children's Librarian from Bucyrus Public Library, will provide you with seven...yes seven...ready-made, take-back-and-do storytime programs for summer 2024!
Presenter:
Barbara Scott has been the Children's Librarian at the Bucyrus Public Library for the past 39 years. She is a member of OLC and has served on various committees, Executive Director of Crawford Reads 20 (local grass-roots literacy organization), Local Champion for the local affiliate of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, member/instructor of the Ohio Ready to Read Task Force. She has been doing storytimes for 39 years and also heads up their popular Music, Movement, and More program that has branched out from the library into area preschools/schools.
Shelley Goodwin-Bain, Public Services Librarian, Avon Lake Public Library
Shelley has been part of the Children's Department for the last 2 1/2 years. She spends most of her time doing preschool outreach and family storytimes. Shelley is the perfect example of someone who claims to have no natural artistic ability, but give her clear instructions (with no need for free-hand drawing) and she plays an active role in decorating. If she can do it, anyone can!
Carol Henderson, Children’s Services Associate, Avon Lake Public Library
Carol has survived many exciting seasons of summer decorating - from the giant pirate ship to the much smaller (but still larger than life) petting sheep. She has fun figuring out how to make just about anything from basement & back room supplies, using insulation board (yep..the stuff inside your walls), cardboard, paint, and a wide variety of tape, zip ties, and fishing line - often all at the same time.
Sybil Wendling, Public Services Manager, Avon Lake Public Library
Sybil has been a part of the ALPL Children’s Department decorating team for the past 12 years. She has burnt her fingers on a glue gun too many times to count, spilled paint on her favorite shoes, and used a staple gun to attach things to a wall (maybe don’t do that). Over the years, she has learned a lot about coordinating a team of creative folks and keeping everyone on task. She still has paint clothes in her desk drawer from last summer & can’t wait to use them again!
Lunch is included in this workshop.
