Speaking of Technology: Optimizing Communication between Library Staff and IT Staff
Date/Time
9/27/2017
9:30 AM - 12:30 PM Eastern
Event Description
Communication as a two-way street is always important but it is absolutely critical when working on technical projects or problems where a shared vocabulary may be absent.  Ensure the success of your next technical project or the quick resolution of daily technical problems through enhanced communication.

This workshop will focus on:
  • Cautionary tales--impact/perils of poor communication with IT.
  • Opportunities/reasons for library staff to interact with IT.
  • Roles differentiation: library staff (subject matter experts), IT (technical experts), and vendors.
  • Basics of effective technical communication—oral and written.
  • Specific guidelines and exercises around reporting technical problems effectively.
Presenters:
Steve Szatmary is a self-employed consultant in systems design, configuration, and maintenance specializing in Linux and UNIX systems at the infrastructure level. He is a 1990 graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College (now Baldwin Wallace University). He has taken graduate level courses in mathematics at Purdue and Case Western Reserve Universities and more recently electrical and computer engineering courses at Cleveland State University. He has been employed or contracted by NASA Lewis Research Center (now NASA Glenn), MTD Products, Multi-Dimensional Imaging, Ingalls Library, Cleveland Museum of Art and Lane Fertility Institute in roles varying from programmer to research and development to systems administrator.

Niki Krause is the Director of Application Services at the Cleveland Museum of Art, where she manages applications development and implementation projects; software needs assessment and workflow analysis; best-practice setup for applications configuration and maintenance; metadata standards and data flow; and user account policy. She contributes to digital strategy policy development, including definition of ‘the big picture.’ Niki holds an MLIS from Kent State University, and Bachelor's degrees in Chemistry, Art History, and Journalism from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining the Cleveland Museum of Art staff, she spent two years in R&D for a scientific-composition firm, three years as a developer/database administrator for a large secondary publisher, and fourteen years as an applications developer/systems specialist for a database software company. At CMA, she served as Systems Librarian in the Ingalls Library before moving to the IMTS department.
