A Note From the
Continuing Education Coordinator

Let the adventure begin!  We are excited to announce that registration is now open for all three of NEO-RLS’s summer reading programs.

Children’s Summer Reading Workshop, Thursday, January 11th at the Hilton Garden Inn in Twinsburg
During this workshop there will be plenty of time for networking and out of the box thinking as well as presentations on intergenerational, STEM, Art, and Preschool programming.  There will be a decorations segment and time to discuss tracking.  We will also have a programming palooza.

Teen Summer Reading Workshop, Thursday, February 1st at Bainbridge Library in Geauga County
The program will have sessions on marketing to teens, STEM programming, Role Playing Games, virtual reality and so much more.  Not to mention time to share your resources, brainstorming, networking, and a programming palooza.

Adult Summer Reading Workshop, Thursday, February 8th at Westlake Porter Public Library
The adventure will continue with the programming palooza, brainstorming of ideas, rapid-fire crafts, adult escape rooms with a virtual element and plenty of time to network.

In the announcements are more details about the programming palooza as well as a call for those that have unique programs to present.

If you are planning summer reading you will not want to miss these programs and opportunities to network with your peers.

Have a great day!

Melissa

Interested in Sharing a Unique Program?

Each summer reading workshop will include a programming palooza.  The programming palooza is where one or two people share their program at a table for about 8 minutes and then those at the table have 5 minutes to ask questions. The attendees then move to another table and the person sharing presents again. It's a bit like musical chairs because people look for an open spot. We do about 6 rounds of this. I am also going to freeze tables so those that present can hear at least one other program.  In addition, those who share their programs create a one-sheet that tells you all about the program so if you cannot get to that table, you still have the information and contact info.

If you are interested in sharing your unique program for either the children, teen, or adult summer reading workshop please email Melissa Lattanzi no later than December 18th.

Apply for a COBAA Collection Development LSTA Grant

The State Library of Ohio invites libraries to apply for a collection development grant to purchase books by Ohio authors and books recognized by Ohio-based book award programs. The Celebrating Ohio Book Awards & Authors (COBAA) LSTA grant program is a unique opportunity to enrich library collections with books having an Ohio connection. The maximum grant award is $2,000 per eligible institution.  COBAA grant proposals must be submitted via the State Library website by 11:59PM, January 16, 2024. Using the online grant application process is required.

“The State Library of Ohio is delighted to offer the COBAA LSTA grant once again,” expressed Evan T. Struble, Associate State Librarian for Library Development. “Robust and relevant collections remain a critical part of the exceptional service provided by Ohio libraries. Offering libraries the chance to expand their collections and raise awareness about outstanding Ohio-connected authors and illustrators—all while requiring no local match funds—is an initiative The State Library of Ohio is excited to support.”

The 2023 COBAA Book List contains over 2,000 eligible books including those nominated and awarded by the Ohioana Book Awards, Buckeye Children's and Teen Book Award, James Cook Book Award, Dayton Literary Peace Prize, The Anisfield-Wolf Award, Thurber Prize for American Humor, and Norman A. Sugarman Children's Biography Award. Also included are all Choose to Read Ohio and Floyd’s Pick selections to date. The awarded federal funds must be used to purchase titles from the COBAA Book List.
