The State Library of Ohio is pleased to announce the addition of two new circulating NASA@ My Library programming kits.

The new kits have been provided from Space Science Institute through a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore foundation, and additional copies of kits to increase availability have been provided through Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

The new kits are designed for libraries preparing programming about solar topics in advance of the 2023 Annual Eclipse and the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse, as part of the Space Science Institute’s Solar Eclipse for Libraries Program (SEAL).

The Younger Audience kit provides activities geared at younger audiences such as elementary age students. The Kit includes a Sunspotter, Mini Sunoculars and an activity based on the book MoonBear’s Shadow.

The Multi-Generational Programming kit is designed to help your library provide programs for all age groups. The kit includes two large Sunoculars, a sun telescope, and activity materials about the sun.

In addition to these new kits, the State Library also has two other space science kits available for programming:

Sun-Earth-Moon Connections kit which focuses on activities and experiences that better help patrons understand their place in space, and how our Sun and Moon impact our planet.

Be A NASA Detective kit focuses on activities and experiences that help patrons be more comfortable using tools of science, and making predications based on their observations. This kit focuses on things we cannot see with our normal vision on sense with our normal senses.

Kits may be reserved for two weeks based on availability and will be delivered through statewide delivery. Questions about NASA@ My Library may be addressed to Penelope Shumaker at pshumaker@library.ohio.gov.

As you’re planning displays, booklists, and other tools to entice your patrons to check out and read books this summer, keep in mind that Choose to Read Ohio (CTRO) spotlights great books for all ages by Ohio authors and illustrators, and offers free readers’ toolkits with activities and discussion questions for every book on the CTRO booklists (which is 155 books so far!).

The toolkits, written by Ohio librarians, are a great resource for book-based programming and book discussion groups. You can also print out copies of the toolkits to slip into your library copies of CTRO books. When your patrons check out a book, they will also get an author bio, discussion questions and extension projects, and links for exploring themes and topics of the book that they can do on their own or with their family or book group.

The current CTRO booklist features Watercress by Andrea Wang and Jason Chin, Things Seen from Above by Shelley Pearsall, The Gravity of Us by Phil Stamper, Himawari House by Harmony Becker, Simone Breaks All the Rules by Debbie Rigaud, and ten other great books for children and teens, plus 5 notable books for adults, all by Ohio authors or illustrators. Also check out previous CTRO booklists for dozens of additional books to enjoy and share. Here’s a list of all 155 books chosen for the CTRO list to date.

CTRO spotlights Ohio authors and illustrators and promotes reading across Ohio. CTRO is a collaboration among the State Library of Ohio, the Ohioana Library, and the Ohio Center for the Book, and is guided by an Advisory Council of librarians, educators, and other advocates for reading and readers.
