INFOhio's Beach Bingo Challenge provides fun activities for students in grades K-6 to complete using INFOhio's quality digital resources and web tools. You can distribute it to your summer reading participants who are looking for additional activities for this summer. Parents and guardians will appreciate this tool to engage kids in summer learning and encourage them to explore INFOhio resources in a relaxed environment, to support their confidence and proficiency with research in plenty of time for the school year.

Summer library programs (SLP) are starting up all around Ohio. The State Library asks all Ohio public libraries to report on their SLP at program’s end. Your participation in the 2023 Ohio Summer Library Program Evaluation will help the State Library, Regional Library Systems, suppliers of statewide incentives, and the Collaborative Summer Library Program to provide the most useful resources and support to Ohio’s libraries.

Your participation also allows us to tell stakeholders and decision-makers how summer library programs positively impact children, teens, families, adults, and communities. Data from the survey is also shared with the Ohio Library Council for its advocacy work.

The survey is now open at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/slpeval2023

The survey will be open until September 9. The link will also be added to the Ohio SLP page of the State Library website (library.ohio.gov/ohio-summer-library-program).

I’ll send a reminder in late July, and another in late August for those who have not returned this survey by then.

Please help us achieve 100% participation for 2023!

Here is a summary of the questions on the survey.  Review these questions, and track your SLP activities accordingly if possible. The survey can take as little as ~10 minutes if you have your numbers ready at hand, longer if you have narrative feedback to share. Many respondents spend 20-30 minutes on the survey. Your time is valuable, and your insights and feedback are valuable too.

We will also again collect anecdotes and photos from libraries, to share statewide to demonstrate the positive impact of public library summer programming.  Photos and stories may be used in the annual Ohio SLP Evaluation Report, and in presentations, print, and/or online publications that communicate the importance of libraries for summer enrichment and literacy support.  I encourage you to share your photos and stories with the State Library, so we can show off your summer activities and their benefits.

Janet Ingraham Dwyer is working with a team at the Ohio Dept. of Education to develop a booklist they will distribute at the 2023 Ohio State Fair.

They are looking for librarians’ recommendations on high-quality, current books about aerospace and books about aviation.

They want books for all ages, early childhood through high school/adult, mostly nonfiction/informational but they’d like to include some fiction, especially for the younger grades and early childhood.

Can you help? Please email Janet Ingraham Dwyer all your favorite books for children and teens on the topics of aviation and aerospace. If possible, include:

Title

Author(s); illustrator if applicable

Recommended grade band/reading level from these five options: 0-5 years, K-2nd, 3rd-5th, Middle School, High School/ Adult

Brief (~10 word) description/annotation

Availability in alternate formats – audio, ebook, LP, Braille, languages other than English

If time is tight, just author/title and grade band is plenty, but the other info would be a huge help if possible.

Janet will share the booklist on the LYS list when it’s completed.

Thanks in advance for all your recommendations!
