OVERVIEW:

ACDL’s Lakeside High School Branch / Emerging Technologies Librarian will lead the Ashtabula Area City Schools’ newly reopened school library at Lakeside High School. This library will be open to staff and students from 8am to 4pm, three (3) days per week during the academic year. The balance of this position’s time will be dedicated to the exploration, implementation, and instruction of new and emerging technologies available to the Library and the community at large.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

· Advances the mission, vision, and goals of the Library by providing the leadership and expertise required to ensure that the Lakeside High School library is an integral component of the school’s instructional program;

· Within established system policies and procedures, enthusiastically leads the day to day operation of the Lakeside High School library, providing circulation, reference, and information services to its users, and overseeing its volunteers and student services in such a way that efficiency and exceptional customer service is the norm;

· Actively consults with teachers as they plan instruction to ensure the incorporation of appropriate library materials in their daily teaching;

· Instructs students and staff in effective use of the library and information and technology literacy skills including the research process;

· Attracts, retains, and motivates student volunteers to work toward shared objectives;

· Supervises the selection and evaluation of materials in order to develop/maintain a vibrant print and digital resources collection designed to meet/exceed the needs and expectations of staff and students alike;

· Maintains a welcoming library space and serves as teacher/administrator relations liaison to Lakeside High School;

· Enthusiastically promotes system-wide awareness, adoption, and instruction in the use of new and emerging technologies to improve the patron experience, library services, and programming;

· Works with the administrative team to foster a library system culture open to and excited about change;

· Provides presentations and one-on-one instruction in acquired emerging technologies;

· Assists at public service desks at the Ashtabula Public Library as availability and necessity dictates.

The Lakeside High School Branch / Emerging Technologies Librarian promotes a positive work environment by maintaining respectful and courteous interactions at all times, builds relationships within the community, and provides excellent customer service by demonstrating the ability to communicate effectively with people regardless of age, race, sexual orientation, ability or background.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A. Education/Experience: Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution is required. Valid driver's license and dependable vehicle with appropriate insurance. Must be able to pass a background check.

B. Knowledge of and Abilities:

· Knowledge of principles and practices of library and information sciences including but not limited to intellectual freedom, censorship issues, and library trends;

· Knowledge of principles and practices of modern library administration including collection development and eservice delivery;

· Knowledge of the basic ethics and values of library service;

· Ability to successfully interact with students and staff from various disciplines and with differing skill levels;

· Ability to effectively coordinate activities of the library, assessing and analyzing current levels of services and materials, making necessary adjustments to ensure high quality library services to all patrons;

· Ability to assess and interpret patron needs using initiative and creativity to change course or to solve problems;

· Ability to balance leadership and direction with teachability;

· Ability to establish and maintain harmonious and effective working relationships;

· Ability to follow through and achieve results as directed;

· Possesses professional judgment and discretion to process confidential information;

· Excellent oral/written communication;

• Works independently without supervision.

C. Desirables:

· Media Specialist coursework

· Two or more years of public library experience;

· Knowledge of YA literature and current trends;

· Experience working with teenagers;

· Knowledge of and experience with emerging technologies;

· Spanish language is a plus.

EQUIPMENT AND EFFORT REQUIRED: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing to communicate well with staff and guests. Sufficient vision to produce and review a wide variety of materials, written correspondence, reports and related material in both electronic and hard copy form. Sufficient mobility to move freely about in an office environment and to attend meetings/events in various locations within the Library service area. Manual dexterity for handling general office forms and mail supplies. Ability to use and file items in file cabinet up to five feet in height. Ability to move items and materials up to 40 pounds in weight. Ability to operate equipment listed: telephones, microcomputers and related peripherals and software, calculators, copier, fax machine.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES (60% of work time, August - May):

· Creates and maintains a school library that provides a teaching and learning environment that is inviting, safe, readily accessible, and conducive to student learning;

· Maintains a collection that is diverse in format and content to support the learning needs of students;

· Works collaboratively with the learning community to develop and implement procedures and practices that make resources, facilities, and professional assistance available at the time of learning;

· Provides both formal instruction in library media and technology skills as well as informal assistance to students and staff in locating and using library media materials and technology;

· In partnership with teachers, implements information and technology literacy skills curriculum;

· Procures resources for staff for use in meeting their instructional objectives;

· Keeps abreast of new trends in library services and technologies; finds and teaches about new technologies;

· Serves as liaison/representative to parents, teachers, and administrators;

· Collects and reports high school library statistics and prepares a monthly report to the Board of Trustees;

· Prepares and presents special reports as needed;

· Provides continuous feedback to the Director.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES (40% of work time, August – May; 100% of work time June - July):

· Aids in the selection, deselection, collection planning and maintenance of the YA collections across the ACDL system;

· Aids in researching and purchasing of emerging technology, and implements programming, both classroom and one-on-one, for library staff and the general public of all ages in the use of mobile devices, digital resources, and emerging technologies;

· Provides reference and public services to the public as availability and necessity dictates.

• Maintain harmonious relationships with coworkers and the public to attain excellent library service;

· Evaluates Branch operations continuously with recommendation for changes and improvements provided to library Director;

· Keeps Director informed of praises, opportunities, problems, developments, concerns, and Branch needs;

· Ensures that adequate advertising, publicity and other PR activities are used to inform the public of services and materials available;

· Ensures materials are maintained in good condition and that new materials are selected in accordance with standard library policy;

• Ensures that outdated and/or damaged materials are withdrawn from the collection in a timely manner;

• Establishes a network of contacts outside the library to promote community development and support of

library activities;

• Attends and actively participates at school and library meetings;

• Demonstrates clear commitment to continuing education.

EVALUATION: To be performed annually by Director, who will base evaluation on the job description, observation, and review of work completed and results achieved.
