The Librarian directs operations and staff of the Library, manages the Library budget, and administers all activities in the areas of reference, collection development, acquisitions, technical services, and the organization of materials. The Librarian provides the tools necessary to facilitate research by Museum staff members and patrons including, but not limited to, printed books, periodicals, auction catalogues, artists’ files, and electronic resources.

Key Responsibilities:

* Directing all Library reference services to Museum staff members and patrons, and providing assistance in person, by phone, or by email. Providing instruction to staff and volunteers in the use of research materials.
* Establishing goals and objectives for the library aligned to the Museum’s mission and in consultation with the Director of Research and the Deputy Director.
* Guiding all Library technical services and collection maintenance activities including the acquisition, organization, cataloguing, processing, and storage of materials, as well as continuing and developing Library record-keeping procedures.
* Preparing and managing the library’s budget, tracking expenditures, and reporting variances.
* Training, supervising, and evaluating the Library Assistant and volunteers.
* Maintaining an awareness of trends and developments in the fields of art and art historical scholarship and publishing, new technologies enabling efficient access to library materials and information about art, and a network of professional colleagues in the field of art librarianship.
* Collaborating with Curatorial, Conservation, Education, Outreach & Audience Engagement, and other departments on the planning of exhibitions, projects, and programs.
* Conducting orientations and presentations about the library’s resources both in-house and for the public. Promoting a positive image of the library to the public, donors, volunteers, and other library and museum professionals.

The North Carolina Museum of Art is a division of the Department of Natural & Cultural Resources. The statutory purpose of the Museum is to acquire, preserve, and exhibit works of art for the education and enjoyment of the people of the State, and to conduct programs of education, research, and publication designed to encourage an interest in and an appreciation of art on the part of the people of the State [GS 140-5.12]. The state's art collection spans more than 5,000 years, from ancient Egypt to the present, making it one of the premier art museums in the Southeast. With a 164-acre campus, the museum also has the distinction of being one of the largest museum art parks in the world with an extensive trail system that connects to the 63-mile Capital Area Greenway through the city of Raleigh. Facilities include two main museum buildings, a large outdoor performing arts facility, parking lots, bike trails, and greenways.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

* Demonstrated experience with library administrative practices, acquisitions, financial management, and library systems.
* Demonstrated experience guiding and participating in library technical services including original and copy cataloguing that utilizes national cataloging standards, including MARC, AACR2/RDA (Anglo-American Rules 2nd Edition), LCSH (Library of Congress Subject Headings), and LCCN (Library of Congress Control Numbers).
* Demonstrated experience providing reference assistance to library patrons.

Management Preferences:

* Bachelor of Arts degree or Master’s degree in art history or related field.
* Demonstrated extensive knowledge of art history and art literature.
* Demonstrated administrative experience or experience participating in collection development in an academic or museum library, or comparable setting.
* Three to five years of experience in an academic or museum library, or comparable setting.
* Demonstrated familiarity with one or more foreign languages, preferably French, German, or Italian.
* Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
* Demonstrated the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master's degree in library and information science or a related discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
