Position Available: Position available immediately. This is a three-year, 100%, twelve-month, visiting appointment, with the potential to become permanent.
Duties and Responsibilities: The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Library seeks a dynamic and collaborative librarian to serve as the Visiting Design & Materials Research Librarian in the Ricker Library of Architecture and Art. The Ricker Library serves the Illinois School of Architecture, the School of Art & Design, and the Krannert Art Museum, and with this position, the Siebel Center for Design, along with many other faculty, staff, students, and community users interested in art and design. The Ricker collaborates with a variety of units in the Main, Undergraduate, and branch libraries to support the university’s library needs. This position will work with Business Information Services, Grainger Engineering Library, Funk ACES Library, undergraduate and media services, and the University Archives in particular.
This position requires a professional with interest in designing and implementing highly impactful, innovative projects and services for our art and architecture users, focusing on design disciplines across digital methods and physical resources, i.e., materials libraries. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain experience and skills across art and architecture librarianship and will work on independent projects and shared initiatives in the Ricker Library, across the University Library, and the campus community.

Position Description: Reporting to the Head of Ricker Library of Architecture & Art, the Visiting Design & Materials Research Librarian contributes to the research support, instruction, and outreach efforts of the University Library. The incumbent will join a team of thoughtful, user-centered colleagues who are passionate about designing and implementing inclusive, innovative, and collaborative projects with our users. Specific duties include:
* Lead design research initiatives at the University Library, including researching and implementing the findings of a feasibility study to institute a materials research library
* Liaise with the Siebel Center for Design, as well as one or more design-related unit in the School of Architecture or School of Art & Design, based on education and interests. This includes the following activities:
* Collect resources in assigned liaison area, including print (published and self-published materials such as zines and ephemera), electronic, primary source, material samples, and open access resources; work collaboratively with Head of Ricker Library on joint collection development and collection management efforts; and potentially with other Library units as relevant
* Provide research consultation services for the University’s students and faculty in assigned liaison area, as well as contribute to reference and circulation efforts generally at Ricker Library
* Lead instruction activities in assigned liaison areas; work collaboratively with Head of Ricker Library on cohesive instruction design, curriculum mapping, and assessment strategies across Ricker’s assigned units
* Engage with colleagues across the University Library, including in areas such as engineering, city planning and landscape architecture, business, as well as media and undergraduate services, to support multidisciplinary work
* Support the mission, goals, and objectives of the Library and the University
* Contribute to the work of relevant Library and University committees and workgroups
* Contribute to the national and international reputation of the University Library through professional research, service, and collaboration with appropriate colleagues and organizations.
Qualifications
Required:
* Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library school or international equivalent; OR advanced degree in in art, architecture, or relevant field AND experience working in a library or conducting similar work
* Undergraduate degree in art, architecture, or relevant fields, OR demonstrated knowledge of the fields through research, service, or substantive projects
* Track record of contributing to equitable and inclusive programs and resources
* Models strong leadership skills, such as evidence-based decision-making, creativity, or advocacy
* Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collectively in a demanding and rapidly changing environment, exhibited in traits such as time-management, flexibility, and follow-through
* Well-developed analytical, organizational, and communications skills (oral, written, and interpersonal)
* Potential to contribute to the national and international reputation of the University Library through professional research, service, and collaboration with colleagues and organizations.
* Experience using art and architecture information resources
Preferred:
* Demonstrable public service experience
* Experience in web design, social media, digital scholarship, digital information resources, open educational resources, or equivalent
* Experience developing materials libraries
Environment: The Ricker Library of Architecture and Art is a rich environment for art and design research; it has over 150,000 items in its collections, and has collection strengths in architecture, history of architecture, architectural preservation, and history of art. Special formats include Catalogues raisonnés, exhibition catalogs, artists’ books, and other media such as microfilm and microfiche. Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis’ art libraries and museums are within two to three hours' travel, enhancing professional growth opportunities and providing many opportunities for potential collaborations.

Salary and Rank: Minimum salary is $60,000 and commensurate with credentials and experience.
Terms of Appointment: Twelve-month appointment; 24 annual vacation days; 11 annual paid holidays; 12 annual sick-leave days (cumulative), plus an additional 13 sick-leave days (non- cumulative) available, if needed, each year; health insurance requiring a small co-payment is provided to employee (with the option to purchase coverage for spouse and dependents); required participation in State Universities Retirement System (SURS) (8% of annual salary is withheld and is refundable upon termination), with several options for participation in additional retirement plans; newly-hired employees are covered by the Medicare portion of Social Security and are subject to its deduction.
