Event Description
"Imagine Your Story” is the theme for this year’s summer reading program. Come join your teen library colleagues for a program focused on summer reading. There will be something for everyone whether you choose this theme or not. In this workshop you will learn about YALSA’s Transforming Teen Services , preparing students for summer jobs, and how to conduct a writing workshop. You will hear a rapid-fire session of program ideas, have a chance to network with your peers and so much more.
Transforming Teen Services: Understanding Connected Learning (1 hour)
As libraries, we have the opportunity to be age-appropriate connected learning hubs in our communities. This workshop introduces participants to the core concept of Connected Learning (CL) and its six foundational pillars, and challenges them to think about how to apply CL to existing and/or new library programs and services.
Learning Objectives:
Presenters: Steve Moser, Dayton Metro Library, Kristin Wilson, Loudonville Public Library and Janet Ingraham Dwyer, State Library of Ohio
Kristin, Steve, and Janet are the Ohio team of YALSA’s national Transforming Teen Services cohort. Also active in an array of learning environments including OLC, Teen Think Tank, Take 5, and more, they do have day jobs: Kristin is Youth Services Librarian at Loudonville Public Library, Steve is Teen Services Coordinator at Dayton Metro Library, and Janet is Youth Services Consultant at the State Library of Ohio.
Summer Interns
YALSA has redone the Summer Intern toolkit. Learn about the highlights of the updated toolkit as well as how to effectively integrate teens into the inner workings of your summer reading program.
Presenter: Melanie Lyttle, Madison Public Library
Melanie Lyttle is the Head of Public Services at Madison Public Library. Working with teen interns and volunteers at MPL since 2010, she was also on the YALSA Teen Intern Toolkit group this past summer. She has served on many committees for YALSA, ALSC, and PLA as well as the co-author of Library Service to Tweens from McFarland & Company.

Presenter: Sarah Amazing, Warren Trumbull County Public Library
Sarah Amazing is the Teen Services Coordinator at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library. She is active in YALSA and the Ohio Library Council, and presents throughout Ohio on a variety of topics, most notably teen programming and library marketing. When not working, she’s usually watching Let’s Plays or MasterChef. She blogs at zen-teen.com. ​
Creative Writing:
Want to provide a high-quality writing workshop for your students but have no budget? Hey, me too! Learn from my experiences running creative writing classes and workshops for students. Whether you have an afternoon or a whole summer, we'll cover an option that's write for you!
* 8 week full curricula for 6-12 grade
* 3 hour intensive writing and editing workshop
* Weekly themed writing drop-in
Everything we cover is fully adaptable, with group size, budget, technology availability, and literacy level all taken into account.
Presenter: Marisha Sullivan, Stark County District Library
Marisha Sullivan is a Youth Librarian at Stark Library in Canton, OH. While her teaching background is mostly in theatre, she has become a true generalist over the last few years, working to bring high-quality educational and recreational programming to her students that are based in their needs and interests. This has led to some truly unique experiences and a philosophy of continuous, community-based learning. She has taught children and teens everything from aeronautics to ballroom dance to anger management and loves nothing more than helping her library kids find their new favorite thing.

Summer is a popular time for teens to try to get a job. Whether it’s a seasonal position or one that lasts through the school year, how can libraries help their teens land a first job somewhere?
