More and more libraries are developing relationships with community partners outside the walls of the library. Libraries are often also writing grants to help enhance the services they can provide. Now consider combining these two efforts; getting a grant with partnerships that support your community can create a significant positive impact.
In this workshop, learn how community engagement can work in your library and how to gain those partnerships that can enhance your case for getting grants. We will discuss what community engagement is, how it is different from outreach, and how you can begin finding those opportunities within your own community. Real world examples of community engagement from Ohio library systems, both large and small, will be covered. In addition, this workshop explores how to build your best case for getting a grant, including how to find the numbers you need and build them into a strong argument.

Presenters:
Kalyn Kappelman is the Generalist at the Warrensville Heights Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library and is the 2018-2019 NEO-RLS Rising Star Award winner. She recently worked as the Training and Special Projects Coordinator at Reed Memorial Library. Kalyn has written and managed two LSTA grants, successfully partnering with the Ravenna School District to bring more STEM education to the Ravenna community. She has also partnered with local organizations from senior centers to the local Chamber of Commerce to the Portage County Family and Community Services.
Maggie Killman is the Youth Community Engagement Librarian at the Shaker Heights Public Library. She has many years' experience engaging communities and managing partnerships and is actively involved with OLC. In her current role, Maggie maintains over 60 distinct partnerships on behalf of of the library. She recently completed a grant project through the 2019 LSTA Competitive Grants to create an Early Literacy Outreach Collection that augments the library's Early Literacy Outreach program by circulating diverse books to local early childhood classrooms. Born and raised in Nashville, TN, Maggie has a Master of Science in Information Science from the University of Tennessee Knoxville.
