Event Description
The 6th Annual Directors’ Retreat will focus on training directors, assistant directors and deputy directors from multi-type libraries in the purposeful collection, analysis and use of data for effective decision-making.  Conducted by three instructors from the Research Institute for Public Libraries (RIPL), the two-day Retreat will act as Ohio’s first RIPL Regional.  To ensure applicability for academic and special library attendees, Eric Resnis, Organizational Effectiveness Coordinator for the Miami University Libraries, will facilitate break-out sessions on Community Needs Assessment and Data Analysis.  The 50 attendee limit will allow facilitators to work with participants on hands-on activities, provide individual coaching and engage in discussions related to the application of concepts to your specific library and community.

The NEO-RLS two-day Directors’ Retreat is open to Directors from multi-type libraries.  Over the past two years, the Retreat has been opened to Assistant and Deputy Directors as well and has attracted academic, special and public librarians.  The format of the Directors’ Retreat – immersive learning around a specific theme and including small group work, roundtable discussion and personal action plans – lends itself well to the format of RIPL’s two-day regional meetings.  “In addition to helping individual attendees gain knowledge and confidence with data and evaluation,” Dr. Linda Hofschire, Director of the Library Research Service, State Library of Colorado, says that the regional format aims to build an ongoing network of librarians who can share their expertise.

Workshop Topics:
  • Tools and competencies to lead evidence-based practice within your specific library and community
  • Methods to increase overall knowledge in the areas of community needs assessment, outcome based evaluation, survey design, data analysis, benchmarking, and data visualization
  • Collaboration with RIPL to advocate for rigorous evaluation practices and the use of data in strategic planning and all other aspects of library management

Presenters:
Linda Hofschire is the Director of the Colorado State Library’s Library Research Service. She has more than 15 years of experience working in social science research and evaluation. At LRS, she manages a variety of research and evaluation projects such as a biennial study of U.S. public library websites and social media, and outcome-based evaluations of state library programs. She also serves as the chair of ALA’s Committee on Research and Statistics. She has an MA and PhD in Mass Media from Michigan State University, where she received extensive training in research methods and statistics, and an MLIS from the University of Illinois. She is passionate about making data accessible and meaningful to users.

She currently serves on the PLA Project Outcome Taskforce where she is helping design, test and implement tools for outcome measurement for libraries across the country.

Logan spent many years serving on Colorado Association of Libraries committees and was the President of CAL in 2010. Her work on national level research committees includes PLA Research and Statistics, and the Public Library Data Service. She was chair of the ALA Committee on Research and Statistics in 2007-08.  Rochelle is now a library consultant specializing in training, outcome-based evaluation, survey administration, data analysis, and collection development.

Sharon Morris is Director of Library Development at the Colorado State Library. She recently completed a doctorate in Managerial Leadership in Libraries from Simmons College.  Sharon has an MLS, has worked at the state library for thirteen years and previously worked at the Denver Public Library for nine years. She provides workshops throughout Colorado and nationally on library development topics. She also facilitates public library strategic planning, focus groups, usability testing, and needs assessment.

Eric Resnis currently serves as Organizational Effectiveness Coordinator for the Miami University Libraries. He participated in ACRL’s Assessment in Action program both as a team leader (year 1) and as a co-facilitator (year 3). Eric is Vice President/President-Elect (2017-2018) of the Academic Library Association of Ohio, the Ohio chapter of ACRL.
