The Political Librarian (Academic Libraries): Setting the Stage
Date/Time
10/10/2017
10:00 AM - 11:00 AM Eastern
Event Description
The landscape for higher education funding, both overall, and specific to academic libraries, has been radically re-shaped by broader changes in U.S. politics and in the U.S. economy. What are the implications of the “new normal” in higher education budget and finance for academic libraries, librarians, and library leaders?

Two recent examples from public higher education will set the stage for this webinar: the University of Missouri – Columbia (MU) and Southern Illinois University – Carbondale (SIU).

In this webinar, Scott Walter, University Librarian at DePaul University, will introduce the broad change drivers currently shaping higher education finance as well as the ways in which these changes are putting new pressures on library budgets and placing new challenges in front of library leaders charged with advocating for needed resources for their libraries, library staff, and user communities. The first of two webinars scheduled as part of the “Political Librarian” series, Walter will conclude by introducing the “political frame” for academic library leadership and suggesting ways in which new approaches to advocacy and coalition-building are necessary for success in the current higher education funding environment. This discussion will continue, with concrete suggestions for coalition-building on your campus, in the second webinar in this series, “[Add title],” with John Chrastka, Executive Director of EveryLibrary.
